MyLab Statistics (MLS) Grade Example

MLS grade calculation is based on the Weighted Average method.
Each section has equal weights.
This is how your MLS grades are calculated.

(1.) The MyLab Statistics (MLS) has 10 chapters: Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10.

(2.) The 10 chapters has 36 main sections.
These are Sections: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 2.1-2.2, 2.3-2.4, 2.5, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 6.1, 6.2, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, 10.1, 10.2
Because I do not want to overwhelm you with many questions per section, each section is further divided into more sections.
Hence, the 36 sections are further divided into 41 sections.
So, we are dealing with 41 sections. Please see them in the calculator.

(3.) 41 sections count for 100% on MLS
This implies that each section count for

$ \dfrac{100}{41} = 2.43902439\% \\[5ex] $ This is what should be entered in the Weight section of the calculator.

(4.) Let us do an example.
Assume Student A made a:
98% on Section 1.1
90% on Section 1.2
86% on Section 1.3
Student A is aware that 100% can be made on all three sections by doing similar questions of the questions got incorrectly.
However, Student A is content with the grades made so far and wants to find the current grade.
What is the current grade for Student A?

Student A's current grade
MLS Section Weight (%) Your Score (%) Weighted Score
(Weight * Your Score)
Section 1.1 2.43902439 98 239.0243902
Section 1.2 2.43902439 90 219.5121951
Section 1.3 2.43902439 86 209.7560976
$\Sigma Weights = 7.317073171$ $\Sigma Weighted\;\;Scores = 668.2926829$
$ Current\;\;Grade = \dfrac{\Sigma Weighted\;\;Scores}{\Sigma Weights} = \dfrac{668.2926829}{7.317073171} = 91.33333333 \approx 91\% $

Student A's current MLS grade based on these three sections is 91%.
This is the grade that the student will see in the MLS gradebook.

Final Grade Example

Final grade calculation is also based on the Weighted Average method.
Howevever, each assessment does not have has equal weight.
This is how your final grade is calculated.

Final Grade Example
Assessments Weight (%) Your Score (%) Weighted Score
(Weight * Your Score)
MyLab Statistics 70 90 6300
Test 1 5 95 475
Test 2 5 85 425
Test 3 5 80 400
Project 10 100 1000
Final Exam 5 70 350
$\Sigma Weights = 100$ $\Sigma Weighted\;\;Scores = 8950$
$ Current\;\;Grade = \dfrac{\Sigma Weighted\;\;Scores}{\Sigma Weights} = \dfrac{8950}{100} = 89.5 \approx 90\% $

Please NOTE:
(1.) This is the grade you will see in the Canvas gradebook.

(2.) You must not complete all fields.
You can calculate your current grade at any time during the course based on the assessments you have done.
Then, you can verify your calculations with the calculator.

(3.) The final grade is rounded to the nearest integer only one time.
A grade of 89.50000001% is rounded to a 90% which is an A while a grade of 89.499999 is rounded to an 80% which is a B.

(4.) At least a final grade of 70% (C) is required to pass the course.

(5.) There is no extra credit or bonus point or curving grades for the course.
Please review the Frequently Asked Questions for explanations.

(6.) Please send an email to me and/or attend the Office Hours/Live Sessions if you have any questions.
